Terre Exotique’s saffron powder is a prized spice for making traditional Valencian paella, or using in Scandinavian baking. Originating in the Middle East, saffron was first grown over 4,000 years ago, and is now considered one of the most expensive spices in the world due to the tedious harvesting process – approximately 150,000 crocus flowers are needed to produce 1kg of saffron.

To harvest saffron, the stigmas are removed from the flowers while keeping intact the aromatic part of the flower – this requires precision and patience. The red stigma is what gives saffron its vivid colour and complex mix of sweet, perfumed, bitter, mineral and honeyed aromas – no one person can agree on how it tastes!

You only need a small pinch of saffron powder to impart a beautiful colour and floral taste to dishes. Use it to make traditional Valencian paellas, French bouillabaisse, and velvety smooth Italian risottos. Alternatively, pair with cinnamon and nutmeg to create spiced Scandinavian buns.

About Terre Exotique

Terre Exotique works directly with hundreds of specialist farmers and producers around the world – to bring the very best peppers, spices and salts to our tables. The company was founded by Erwann de Kerros, a Breton and seasoned traveller. After tasting pepper in the Penja plantation in Cameroon, Kerros yearned to try other specialist peppers and spices – and Terre Exotique was born.

The company works closely with farmers to preserve natural habitats, and to ensure a sustainable income for local communities. Each spice is carefully packed in tins or glass jars – with no plastic. The metal tins preserve the flavours and aroma of your spice, by protecting them from sunlight. So the ingredients stay at their best for longer.
