Rose water, or roesewater, is a great way to infuse food with natural, strong floral flavours. This rose water is made by boiling rose petals in water, and then capturing and condensing the steam.

The clear-coloured rose water works well in syrups, baklava, ice creams, meringues and even rice puddings. Start by adding a small amount of the rose water – it is easier to add than take away, and the perfume is quite intense.

What is rosewater good for?

Rosewater is highly valued in culinary and cosmetic applications due to its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties and its distinctive floral scent. In cooking, it’s commonly used to add a subtle floral note to desserts like baklava, puddings, and pastries. Additionally, in skincare, rosewater is used as a gentle toner and hydrating mist that can help calm the skin and reduce redness.

Can you drink rose water straight?

Yes, you can drink rose water straight, but it is usually consumed in small quantities due to its strong floral flavour. It is often added to beverages like lemonades or cocktails for a subtle rose essence. However, it’s important to ensure that the rose water is food-grade and not cosmetic grade, which may contain additives not suitable for consumption.
